One card for several ChatGPT or Claude accounts: why it raises the risk of a ban
Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has a written one-card rule. What they do write is enough to see why paying for several accounts with the same card is a bad idea, and what to do instead.
One card, several ChatGPT or Claude accounts: for yourself, for family, for a few friends who chip in. It looks harmless, and for a while it usually works. But a card is not invisible to the company it pays, and the accounts it pays for stop looking unrelated. Here is what OpenAI and Anthropic actually say, what we conclude from it, and the safe way to pay.
Is it written anywhere that it is not allowed?
No. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic writes, in its terms or its help pages, that paying for several accounts with one card is forbidden or gets them banned. OpenAI even says you can create additional accounts, for example for a different plan, and Anthropic's rules are aimed at abuse across accounts rather than at how many accounts someone has.
So why this guide? Because what the two companies do write is enough to see why a shared card is a risk, and a ban usually costs you the rest of what you paid.
What a shared card looks like from the other side
Subscriptions are charged through a payment processor. Stripe, the best known of them, said in 2023 that its billing and checkout power ChatGPT Plus; Anthropic does not name the processor for its personal plans. Stripe's documentation shows what a merchant can see about a card.
- Same card, recognised. Stripe gives each card number a fingerprint, so a merchant can "check whether two customers who've signed up with you are using the same card number". A different name or email on each account does not change it.
- Counted. Stripe's fraud rules can count how many customers and how many email addresses one card has been used with.
- Used against fraud. Anthropic's privacy policy lists payment information among the data it uses to prevent and investigate fraud, abuse and violations of its usage policy. OpenAI's lists preventing fraud and misuse among the purposes it uses personal data for.
What the OpenAI and Anthropic rules actually say
| Topic | OpenAI (ChatGPT) | Anthropic (Claude) |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing an account | You may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else | The same: you may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else |
| Getting around limits | You may not circumvent rate limits or restrictions | You may not coordinate malicious activity across multiple accounts to avoid detection |
| After a ban | Waiting 30 days does not reactivate a deactivated account | You may not get around a ban with a different account, new or existing |
| Suspension | For breaking the terms, or if your use could cause risk or harm | At any time, without notice, if they believe you broke the terms |
| Refund | Payments are non-refundable, except where the law requires | No refund if the account is terminated for breaking the terms |
| One card, several accounts | Not stated | Not stated |

So why a shared card raises the risk
This part is our reading of the rules above, not a rule either company has published.
- Looks like sharing. From the outside, one card paying for several people's accounts is what shared and resold accounts look like, and both companies forbid handing an account to anyone else.
- Ties accounts together. If one of the accounts is banned, the card links it to the others. Anthropic forbids getting around a ban through a different account, new or existing, so an account paid for by a banned account's card is in an awkward place.
- Payments get declined. OpenAI says renewals can fail "due to security measures". Users on OpenAI's community forum report their card being declined after several accounts on it; that is their report, not OpenAI's.
- Nothing comes back. A ban usually takes the rest of the paid period with it: Anthropic says there is no refund when an account is terminated for breaking the terms, and OpenAI says payments are non-refundable except where the law requires.
The safe way: one person, one account, one card
- Your own account. Pay for your own ChatGPT or Claude account with your own card, and do not put anyone else's account on it.
- Everyone their own. If family members or colleagues each have an account, each of them pays with their own card.
- Teams, team plans. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are built for several people on one bill: the team pays for every seat, and each person signs in with their own account. Both start at two seats.
- No shared accounts. An account sold to several people at once breaks the no-sharing rule of both companies, whoever pays for it.
- Two for yourself. OpenAI says you may create more than one account. Just know the card ties them: if one runs into trouble, the other sits right next to it.
Your PayFar card and your accounts
A PayFar card is a Visa card with its own number, issued to your own PayFar account. Use it for your own accounts. If someone else needs to pay for their ChatGPT or Claude, they can open their own PayFar account and get their own card.
PayFar cannot lift a ban on a ChatGPT or Claude account; that decision is the service's. An appeal goes to the company itself: for Claude, sign in to the banned account at claude.ai and use the appeal form in Anthropic's help center.
Frequently asked questions
Is it against the rules to pay for two accounts with one card?
Not in so many words: neither company publishes a one-card rule. What is against the rules is sharing an account, making it available to someone else and, at Anthropic, getting around a ban with another account. A shared card is what those usually look like from the outside.
Can I pay for my own ChatGPT and my own Claude with the same card?
Yes. That is the normal case: one account on each service. The risk in this guide is one card spread across several accounts on the same service.
I want a second account for myself. Is that allowed?
OpenAI says you can create additional accounts, for example for a different plan. Anthropic's rules target abuse across accounts, not their number, and it lets one phone number verify at most three accounts. Paying for both with one card still ties them together.
My account was banned. Can PayFar get it back?
No. A ban is the service's decision, and only the service can reverse it. Appeal through its own help center; for Claude, sign in to the banned account at claude.ai and use the appeal form.
Can several people use one ChatGPT or Claude subscription?
Not on one account: both companies forbid making an account available to anyone else. For a group, ChatGPT Business or Claude Team gives each person their own seat on one bill.
